Achromobacter/Alcaligenes Species

I never received the emails with attachments of my test results. However, I did receive the paper copy with today's mail delivery.

The good news is that my c-diff level was <0.01 or negative for c-diff. The bad news is that I seemed to have acquired a new opportunistic bacteria (occurs in people with compromised immune systems) called achromobacter or alcaligenes species. I suspect that overwhelmed my good bacteria, after vancomycin destroyed everything in its path while killing c-diff, even though I took probiotics along with vanco. The diagnosis of that new bacteria would explain the cramping pains, bloating, fatigue and nausea which I now experience. Of course the test result reflected what was in my gut (stool sample) 3 weeks ago. Who knows how prevalent that bacteria is now?!

The lab test results provide a list of pharmaceutical AND botanical (herbal) agents which can eliminate that specific bacteria (or to which agents the bacteria is sensitive or resistant). Although the pharmaceuticals include many antibiotics which influence c-diff recurrence (grrr!!), the botanicals include one (caprylic acid derived from coconut oil) which I previously successfully used to eliminate 2 different bacteria (klebsiella and enterobacter cloacae). So hopefully I can just take some caprylic acid plus probiotics and eliminate my most recently diagnosed bacterial infection

Hi, Sue... oh, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you are able to take the capryllic capsules... sorry if the spelling is wrong there. It seems never ending for you... I will be praying that you are able to find the best thing to eradicate these bad bugs...

Thanks, Lisa. Read more in my next 2 posts. I feel reassured after talking to my doctor today. There's nothing like a 30 minute question and answer period to clarify all my confusion and just vent my frustration about yet another gut bug.

I already noticed a slight difference after taking only 2 Caprylic Acid capsules and probiotics with dinner tonight. I'm familiar with CA and had great results using that to treat klebsiella and enterobacter cloacae.

I'm just frustrated that I'm spending yet another period waiting to recover from another gut bug. My life seems to have revolved around 'treatment for the past 5 years. SIGH And I thought I was healthier than most women my age, who struggle with diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc. Appearances can be deceiving. I may LOOK thin and fashionable, but under that chic veneer, another gut bug attacks my intestines. LOL

How, sorry to hear about the infection. I had a comprehensive stool profile done and I have the same thing, (achromobacter/alcaligenes). It has been causing me different levels of discomfort and fatigue for about four years. How has the caprylic acid worked for you? I was using garlic for a while but the bacteria developed a resistance to it after I was retested (my test also revealed the effective botanicals and anti-bacterials). I'm looking to hone in on a treatment that is both effective, safe and lasting so my digestion can return to normal.

Hi Nate: Capryllic acid is a great antibacterial herbal agent. I successfully used it to kill klebsiella, enterobacter cloacae AND that achromobacter bug. For achromobacter my ND prescribed 2 (1000 mg) capsules 2x daily for 2 weeks. My next stool test was free of achromobacter.

However, I developed 2 more infections (H. pylori bacteria and dientamoeba fragils parasite). Everytime we use antibiotics, we risk upsetting our gut bacterial balance and developing new infections.

When my ND said I could ignore the HP bacteria, I decided to get a new doc (a better ND). She recommended I treat HP with mastic gum and turkey rhubarb tincture as well as heal my stomach with L glutamine. I treated the d-frag with Iodoquinol.

I'm now free of pathogenic bugs. I'm also taking Betaine hydrochloride with each meal to kill food born bacteria. I haven't had any gut bug symptoms (and haven't taken any more tests) for the past 18 months.

Hello
I'm researching the 2 forms of bacteria you've recently discovered as well. The oportunistic bacteria is a mystery to treat, while working with alt.med doctor, we still use antibiotic & antifungal to get these gut bacteria. Have you ever used xifaxan? It is specific to the gut bacteria. Also, do you have fatigue, memory/mind clarity issues and high ammonia level? It is hard to find studies on these issues. The gut bacteria though produces a cycle which increases ammonia causing the above symptoms. Thanks for your thoughts! Michelle

Michelle: If you read my later posts, you'll learn that I eliminated the achromobacter by taking caprylic acid for 2? weeks. (3 subsequent stool tests showed I was clear of achromobacter.)

Opportunistic bacteria are not mysterious to treat, if you use a good stool test to diagnose and provide sensitivity reactions to the diagnosed bacteria. I used Metametrix for 6 of my stool tests (which showed bacterial, parasitic or fungal infections). Metametrix results for bacteria and yeasts also list which drugs or botanicals your specific gut bug is sensitive to (or which drug will kill your bug).

Although xifamin is touted as a mulipurpose antibacterial, I prefer to use drugs or botanical agents that have shown through tests to kill my specific gut bug. Wasting time 'trying' all-purpose antibiotics just allows the infection to proliferate.

I don't remember any unusual memory/fatigue issues at the time I had achromobacter. However, I also had undiagnosed hypothyroidism at that time, which I later learned was actually Hashimoto's thyroiditis. (If you read more recent posts, you can see how I deal with that.)

I'm having memory issues...what i need to do before i leave the house etc. Granted I'm 44, but this hasn't been a issue till the last 3 months and now I may know why. Does anyone else have this? Also I'm allergic to all the at home pills I can take from the Dr, from what I've seen online I may in the hospital for awhile to deal with this with an IV.
Also what are other ways I can get this? I need help now and the infectious disease Dr's are stating we need to approve you for a visit. I'm very concerned since I work as a Realtor and I don't want to give this to my clients.

This infection is in my sinus cavity. I've very upset and don't know how I got it.

I developed symptoms for achromobacter after taking antibiotics (vancomycin) for c-diff (2 recurrences) for over 6 months. I suspect Vanco wiped out all my good bacteria and my ND didn't prescribe a potent enough probiotic to replenish all my good bacteria after I stopped taking Vanco. So opportunistic bacteria like achromobacter could take over and populate my gut. After treating achromobacter I acquired yet another bacteria, which I treated, but followed that treatment with a very high dose probiotic (50 billion live cells per capsule) 2x daily for 6 months. For the past 4+ years I've had no more 'gut buhgs'. However, I also addressed my low immunity problems, caused by low vitamin D, low thyroid and low white blood count, which could have left me vulnerable to all those (8) gut bugs and many more respiratory infections during 5 years.

I am dealing with achromobactor in my lungs due cystic fibrosis-type diease. This a very serious 'super bug' which dr'so rarely hold much hope in curing. I do not follow this thinking and thankful I happen upon this posting. Curious on the carry license acid capsules, is this readily available?

I took caprylic acid to eliminate achromobacter, not carry license capsules. Try natural foods/supplements stores or a good naturopath. Good luck!
